WHEATLAND (IOWA) Tara Kluever, a senior at Maquoketa High School, has been named this year’s local F&B Communications $500 Scholarship winner and is also the recipient of a $2,000 Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Scholarship.

Kluever plans to attend Bradley University, Peoria, Ill., in the fall to major in health science and further pursue a master’s degree in physical therapy.

“It is outstanding to have the same student selected for our local scholarship also be chosen to represent our region as an FRS scholarship winner,” Ken Laursen, F&B general manager, said.

Nearly 20 seniors who live in households in the F&B Communications telephone service area submitted applications for the local $500 award.

Kluever was selected for the local scholarship because of her high academic marks and strong involvement in school and community activities, Laursen said.

All students who submitted an application for the local contest were automatically entered in the national FRS program.

With more than 800 applicants for the FRS scholarship, Kluever was one of only 14 students selected from across the country to receive an award. F&B contributed $500, and the foundation provided the additional $1,500 of the $2,000 scholarship award.

“Tara truly represents the best and brightest of tomorrow’s leaders,” Laursen said. “We’re proud to sponsor her and present her with both scholarships.”

A primary goal of both scholarship programs is to ensure that our community’s children have the privilege of attending college and encourage young people to return to rural areas after graduation, Aaron Horman, marketing manager, said.

The local F&B scholarship was started in 2003 because the Board of Directors and employees of F&B are committed to the education of local youth and believe learning is a life-long process.

The FRS was established by the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA) in 1994, of which F&B is a member.

Kluever’s parents Rod and Karen subscribe to F&B telephone service in the Delmar exchange.

F&B Communications is the local telecommunications provider offering telephone, cable television, digital broadcast satellite, dial-up Internet, high-speed DSL Internet and wireless PCS services to customers in the Bennett, Calamus, Delmar, Lowden and Wheatland exchanges and surrounding areas.
