WHEATLAND (IOWA) Michelle Eberhart, a senior at Maquoketa High School from Delmar, has been named this year’s local F&B Communications $500 scholarship winner and has been selected to receive a $2,500 Foundation for Rural Service Scholarship.

Eberhart plans to attend St. Ambrose University, Davenport, in the fall to major in business and study Spanish.

In her application essay, Eberhart wrote of her involvement with Girl Scouts for more than 12 years and how this involvement has prepared her for the future. Along with a leadership role on the Girl Scouts of Mississippi Valley board, she has also received state recognition.

Eberhart was selected for the local scholarship because of her high academic marks and strong involvement in school and community activities, Ken Laursen, general manager, said.

All students who submitted an application for the local contest were automatically entered in the national FRS program.

“It is outstanding to have a student from our service area chosen for an FRS scholarship,” Laursen said.

More than 1,200 applications were submitted to the FRS program this year, and only 30 students were selected from across the nation to receive an award.

High school seniors who live in households in the F&B local telephone service area were eligible for the local award. Students submitted an application form and three finalists were selected for in-person interviews.

A primary goal of both scholarships is to ensure that our community’s children have the privilege of attending college and encourage young people to return to rural areas after graduation, Aaron Horman, marketing manager, said.

The local F&B scholarship was started in 2003 because the Board of Directors and employees of F&B are committed to the education of local youth and believe learning is a lifelong process.

The FRS scholarship contains funding from two sources. F&B contributed $500 and the FRS provided the additional $2,000 of the scholarship. The FRS was established by the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association in 1994, of which F&B is a member. Eberhart is the third person sponsored by F&B to receive an FRS award since 2003.

Eberhart’s parents Joseph and Da Vonne subscribe to F&B services in the Delmar exchange.

F&B Communications is the premiere local telecommunications provider offering telephone, long distance, digital video, dial-up Internet, high-speed DSL Internet, satellite Internet and wireless PCS services to customers in the Bennett, Calamus, Delmar, Lowden and Wheatland exchanges and surrounding areas. The company also provides computer sales and service through their Technology Solutions retail store.
